In an interview with E! Online, the actress said: "Something will happen in the near future, something quite tragic and terrible, that will change the series." Besides stating that such an event will shake everyone, she also says that "Damon, Elena and Stefan are affected in a mad and somewhat controversial."

For completeness, Nina Dobrev confirms what has been said by Kat Graham that the whole dynamic of the series will change. "It will be explosive," says the actress.
